Watercom’s DRAINS a “Key Tool” in Western Sydney Airport Drainage Network Design

3 March 2022

We offer our huge congratulations to Aurecon’s Yuna Chen and Arcadis Australia Pacific’s Rob Peterson on their great presentation on the Western Sydney Airport (WSA) drainage network design project, as part of the Stormwater NSW Technical Event on 3 March. This was a huge and complex undertaking, and we’re proud that the WSA team cited DRAINS as a key tool in achieving the complex modelling required.

The Western Sydney Airport site has a total catchment area of 1,400ha, and the proposed trunk drainage network consists of approximately 48km of underground pipe network, 56km of open channels, 8 detention basins and 10 bioretention basins. Adding to the design complexity, the detailed design of the drainage network considered four milestone development stages concurrently.

In their presentation, the WSA team praised Watercom’s DRAINS, stating:

  • Model validation, achieved through DRAINS 1D, produced model results comparable to Tuflow‘s rainfall on-grid 2D model using ARR 2019 procedures
  • The RAFTS hydrological model and the Full Unsteady Hydraulic engine in DRAINS allowed the team to effectively meet project requirements
  • The faster-running 1D network model provided substantial benefits to meet the tight delivery programme

We were also proud to provide support to Aecom throughout this project.

Message from the Director

2 March 2022

Profile pictureI am incredibly proud and humbled to be taking over as Director of Watercom from today, as part of Watercom’s transfer of ownership to Kustom Engineering Pty Ltd.

In my role as Watercom’s manager over the last three years, I have seen this company thrive and grow, and rise to meet all challenges. Our tools are now used by over 1200 organisations around the world, and we have firmly cemented Watercom’s position as Australia’s leading modelling and analysis software for stormwater and drainage systems.

And the best is yet to come.

For almost 20 years, I have lived and breathed civil engineering – I am passionate about this industry. As a civil engineer myself, I have seen first-hand the needs and opportunities in our field, and as an academic and educator, I have had the privilege of helping shepherd the next generation of engineers into their careers, and to contribute to guiding our profession into the future.

And now, I couldn’t be more excited for the future of Watercom.

Watercom and Kustom Engineering have already shared a close and successful relationship for years, and I’m eager to show you what will come from the joining of these two industry leaders. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, with more announcements to be made in the coming months about new features and technologies, new partnerships and collaborations, and new ways to use and access your Watercom software.

You can read more in our announcement, or please reach out to us with any questions.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to continuing this exciting journey with you.

Dr. Benjamin Kus
Director and Principal Civil Engineer, Watercom

In this same period, Kustom Engineering have firmly cemented themselves as an essential provider of workshop and training solutions in this highly specialised sector.

Facing Challenges Together

The last two years have been challenging for many, but this close partnership between Watercom and Kustom Engineering has allowed us to help our customers thrive.

    • We were able to provide free work-from-home cloud licensing throughout the 2020 lockdowns to support our trusted and loyal customers during a difficult transition into new ways of working.
    • We were able to continue our industry-recognised face-to-face DRAINS workshops by transitioning to online webinars, introducing a free 2-hour Introduction to DRAINS E-Learning webinar, and a full, online 15-hour DRAINS and ARR-2019 E-Learning webinar, with more than 600 engineers enrolled in 18 months.

A Legacy

For the last 30 years at the helm of Watercom Pty Limited, Bob Stack has been responsible for the development and support of DRAINS, PIPES and PIPES++, and due to his guidance this full-featured and user-focused software is now used in over 1200 organisations across Australia and around the world. After 50 years in the water supply, sewerage and stormwater industry, Bob will be stepping back from this role on March 2nd, 2022, as he hands over this responsibility to Ben and the capable team to continue delivering the quality service Watercom is known for.

We are receiving enquiries about the impact of Innovyze recently discontinuing XPRAFTS and how this will affect DRAINS RAFTS.

RAFTS is one of many hydrological models available in DRAINS. Watercom developed the RAFTS Hydrological model equations in DRAINS using the non-linear runoff routing procedures described in ARR 87. It does not use XPRAFTS. Watercom will continue to support the RAFTS model in DRAINS.

A new version of DRAINS is available that allows users to lock pit loss coefficient (Ku) values when revising coefficients, useful when modelling GPT devices.

The former Premium hydraulic model has now been renamed to the ‘Full unsteady hydraulic model’, while the former Standard hydraulic model has been renamed to ‘Lite hydraulic model’.
