DRAINS Core Workshop Summary

Suitable for both new and experienced DRAINS users, our DRAINS Core Workshop is a 2-day, comprehensive and hands-on course led by Dr. Benjamin Kus and Hossein Ansari.

  • Learn or refresh the fundamentals of DRAINS
  • Master and apply AR&R 2019 guidelines to urban drainage

Each workshop includes access to DRAINS e-learning for 90 days, plus a fully-featured DRAINS Unlimited Links Cloud Subscription licence to trial for 10 days. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion and 18 CPD points.

Workshop Details

Pre-Workshop Seminar: 2.5 hour ARR E-Learning Seminar required to complete prior to the workshop.

Workshop Format: Face-to-Face.

Time: 9am to 5pm each day for two days.

E-Learning: Up to 90 days access to DRAINS E-Learning to re-watch or refresh on the full course material covered during the face-to-face workshop, with options to upgrade to 12 months’ access.

Certificate & CPD: Digital Certificate of Completion with 18 CPD.

Dr. Benjamin Kus

Director, Watercom
Founder, Director and Principal Civil Engineer, Kustom Engineering

Dr Benjamin Kus is an astute and accomplished engineer, business manager, academic and educator, with over 20 years experience in urban development, stormwater design, on-site detention and flood studies.


He is a contributing author of the national Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR 2019) guidelines having authored Chapter 5 ‘Stormwater Conveyance’, in Book 9 ‘Runoff in Urban Areas’, has completed a PhD in Engineering – Membrane Technology and Water Harvesting, and is a published author of over a dozen journal papers.

Ben currently helms two of Australia’s leading engineering businesses – Watercom and Kustom Engineering – and is also guiding the nation’s next generation of engineers as a guest lecturer at the University of Wollongong.

Hossein Ansari

Senior Civil Engineer

Hossein is an experienced Civil Engineer with over 20 years of experience, currently working as a Senior Design Officer at Sutherland Shire Council. He has previously worked at the City of Botany Bay Council as a Drainage Investigation Engineer.


In his capacity as a consultant, Hossein has been providing services as a Civil/ Hydraulic Engineer to a number of consulting firms since 2007. Hossein’s experience covers roads, drainage, overland flow path studies, and Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) projects, from inception to detailed design and construction.

In his role as a Drainage Investigation Engineer at City of Botany Bay, Hossein has overseen Floodplain Management projects in liaison with the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). He has also managed several construction projects from tendering stage to managing contractors during the construction phase.

His major interests include hydrological and hydraulic modelling and design utilising various computer software programs including, DRAINS, HEC-RAS, ILSAX, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Civil Site Design, MapInfo, QGIS, ArcMap and other GIS software.
